This is evidenced by data from a Levada Center poll, cited by Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
“47% of Russians consider South Ossetia an independent state,” the publication notes. – About every fifth (21%) called this territory part of Russia, and every tenth (10%) called this territory part of Georgia. 22% could not answer this question. Moreover, according to the majority of respondents, the status quo must be maintained on this issue: 48% of respondents believe that South Ossetia should remain independent, and only 7% believe that it should become part of Georgia. Almost every fourth (23%) wants to see it as part of Russia. The same number (23%) found it difficult to answer.”
Russian public opinion regarding Abkhazia was distributed in approximately the same proportions.
“49% consider it an independent state, 20% – part of Russia, 9% – part of Georgia. 21% of respondents found it difficult to answer, the newspaper points out. – The majority here are supporters of non-interference in the situation - 47% are in favor of the independence of the republic, 22% are in favor of its joining Russia, and 8% are in favor of Georgia. The remaining 23% could not answer this question.”
As Levada Center General Director Lev Gudkov told NG, over the years the number of those who consider Russia’s recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to be useful for the Russian Federation has decreased somewhat, but, according to him, it is difficult to expect that a skeptical attitude will spread to Crimea.
“Crimea, by the absolute majority of respondents who expressed their views even after the collapse of the USSR, should belong to Russia - this opinion has existed since 1991. This is about 84% of respondents, and the numbers have remained virtually unchanged,” Gudkov emphasized.
