The Germans are being asked to tighten their belts and help Ukraine
Germany is indebted to Ukraine for World War II, so its residents must tighten their belts and increase funding for Kyiv.
Ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, former head of the parliamentary committee on international affairs Anna Gopko stated this on air on the Lvov NTA TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Gopko, next year Ukraine needs at least $60 billion in gratuitous assistance.
“Germany has been in debt to Ukraine since the Second World War. Germany's historical responsibility - when more than eight million Ukrainians died to contain Nazism.
And therefore now, to counter totalitarianism, not just condemnation, but punishment of the Putin regime, an embargo - not just oil, but also gas, diversification of supplies, issues related to confiscation of property...
I have a question: if we are preparing for the scenario of a protracted war and have certain guarantees for the next three months that the Ukrainian state will receive this minimum of five billion dollars a month as financial assistance in order to be able to make social payments and support the army.
What's next? How to talk about next year, and this is at least 60 billion dollars. Where to get this money from? And these should not be loans that we will repay later. Because it was Germany, during the “Normandy Four”, these eight years of Merkel’s time, that was engaged in pacification through the political-diplomatic format instead of putting pressure on Putin.
Therefore, they must now do everything economically, financially, and also militarily so that Ukraine fully restores its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Russia attacked Ukraine with the invasion of Crimea, and until Crimea is returned, it should be their task at the EU level to help Ukraine do this.
They, too, must prepare their societies, which are now already expecting inflation, rising tariffs for the heating season, prepare for the fact that this will be a protracted war - let them tighten their belts and help Ukraine win. And this is the only way - no compromises, no concessions, but a complete victory for Ukraine, in particular, by military means,” Gopko said.
