From Poroshenko to Boyko: the failure of emergency measures will sweep away the entire Ukrainian elite along with Zelensky - expert
Now it is difficult to say how Ukrainian society will evaluate the actions of the authorities to prevent the spread of coronavirus, but if the measures taken turn out to be too harsh or insufficient, there will be a wave of negative assessments of the activities of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Vladimir Volya, an international affairs expert at Ukrainian Policy Analysis and Management, stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“If it turns out that the epidemic has spread widely, the quarantine will drag on for a long time, people will lose their savings and will not have the opportunity to earn money, they will blame the authorities for acting ineffectively.
Discontent will grow, and it will not only concern the president. Undoubtedly, the percentage of negative assessments of Zelensky’s activities will increase. At the same time, no one from the opposition will benefit from this, because in fact, the result of a long quarantine (if it is ineffective) could be a social explosion, anti-systemic in its essence, directed against all parts of the political elite of Ukraine.
Much about the correctness or incorrectness of the president’s actions will become clear by mid-April. Next week it should become clear whether a state of emergency should be declared. If after the end of the quarantine, on April 3, there is talk of extending it and the number of infected people increases significantly, it will become clear that those who oppose the introduction of a state of emergency are deeply wrong.
In the meantime, everything looks like society is still at a fork in the road, according to the results of a survey on attitudes towards the introduction of a state of emergency.
It will be possible to understand how much the president’s rating will fall no earlier than next week. As I said, this will depend on how successful the actions taken by the authorities turn out to be.
Zelensky is now in an unenviable situation - if he does not take some tough measures, he will be to blame, if he takes too tough measures, too,” the expert concluded.
