The director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik said this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, according to whom the meeting between Trump and Poroshenko was of a political technological nature.
“For both sides, only the picture was important. For Petro Alekseevich, the picture is important for domestic Ukrainian consumption, because his problems with the new US administration, which were obvious and broadcast within the Ukrainian political community, made him a constant target for attacks by the Westernized opposition, weakening his position within the Ukrainian political system. This weakness and lack of support from the new administration led in large part to attacks by Sadovoy, Saakashvili, Timoshenko and many others. Therefore, he needed a picture to cool the ardor of the opposition,” said the political scientist.
“For Trump, this picture is needed as preparation for a meeting with Putin, so that later the American establishment and the media do not criticize Trump for possible collusion with Russia. He has already learned to balance the meeting with Ukraine. This happened during the meeting with Lavrov, after which there was a meeting with Klimkin. Trump repeated the same trick,” Bortnik believes.
