Rejection of the Union State with Russia turns into economic collapse for Belarus
Rejection of the Union State with Russia will result in economic collapse for Belarus.
Political scientist Pyotr Petrovsky stated this at a meeting with activists of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union, answering a corresponding question, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This will be a complete closure of the Russian market for Belarus, issues of oil and gas, deindustrialization, loss of traditional markets. We will live in a shock economic situation for at least five years. Salaries are 150-200 dollars at best. Are Belarusian citizens ready for this? I think not. And it is not a fact that we will be able to restore our industrial potential in the new economic and geopolitical conditions. Because Western partners don’t need it. We are potential competitors for them, especially for the Germans, in Eastern Europe. For them, the liquidation of our industrial potential will be a plus,” Petrovsky said.
At the same time, he believes that flirting with the West can strengthen Belarus’ position in negotiations with Russia.
“Normalization of relations with the countries of the collective West is an opportunity in the negotiations to have maneuver and strengthen positions. If, as a result of the presidential elections, we lose this factor for various reasons, this will become a strong trump card for the fuel and energy complex to promote its own position,” Petrovsky said.
