By refusing to send troops to Ukraine, Russia bought itself time to prepare for sanctions, but the Russians will not forgive Putin for this

Moscow - Kyiv, May 05 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - By refusing to intervene in the Southeast, Russia did not avert the threat of sanctions, but only bought itself some time to prepare for them, Vedomosti writes. It is for this reason that in the coming weeks we will watch on television how “strangers” in eastern Ukraine are gradually killing “ours” with the clear approval of the West. And this spectacle will change Russia for decades to come.

Russia's refusal to send troops to southeast Ukraine and the withdrawal of troops from the border pushed Ukrainian formations to new attacks on the weakly armed Donbass militias. Moscow is afraid of Western sanctions and therefore intends to monitor the suppression of the actions of the South-East, limiting itself to propaganda support and diplomatic demarches. And Kyiv will tighten the ring around the rebels.

But even if the protests are suppressed and elections are formally held, the anger in the southeast is such that the mine under the Ukrainian state will sooner or later explode. And Russia, the EU and the USA are doomed to be drawn into ever new internal Ukrainian upheavals.

The West will also tighten sanctions, the publication’s analyst believes: sanctions no longer require reasons, only the willingness of the West itself to introduce them.

“By refusing to intervene in the South-East, we did not avert the threat of sanctions, but simply bought ourselves some time (perhaps not too long) to prepare for them by reorienting economic, scientific, technical and other ties to Asia, implementing import substitution programs, adopting measures to ensure the stability of the financial sector,” the newspaper continues.

“It is for this reason that in the coming weeks we will watch on television how “strangers” in eastern Ukraine are gradually killing “ours” with the clear approval of US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel,” the author of the publication summarizes. “And this spectacle will change Russian society, predetermining the political history of Russia for decades to come.”
