Blackouts will resume - a Kiev power engineer explained the availability of electricity during the holidays
Kiev residents managed to spend the New Year holidays without power outages due to the fact that due to the shutdown of industry in Ukraine, it became possible to redirect this electricity to private consumers.
The director of the Center for Energy Research, Alexander Kharchenko, stated this on air on the 1+1 TV channel, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The work week is starting, and planned outages for private consumers will be much more sensitive. Therefore, the generation deficit has not gone away, the problems in the high-voltage network have not gone away, dozens of substations are damaged or completely destroyed, and, unfortunately, this situation cannot be changed quickly.
On the weekend, they didn’t turn off the lights, on the one hand, because the industry was not working, its consumption was very low, all these volumes were reoriented towards people, which is why this feeling arose. Plus, the work that was done has led us to a situation where we are turning off consumers as planned; there are quite a few emergency shutdowns now,” the expert said.
However, according to him, things are sadder.
“The cold weather is coming, and every degree of temperature drop requires an extra 250 megawatts of power from the system, that is, in fact, an extra power unit of a coal-fired power plant. And now we don’t have enough of these blocks, they are damaged by “flying in”, and their age is such that they can break on their own from time to time.
Therefore, the situation remains difficult, the deficit is sensitive, especially in the Kiev region. The main goal of power engineers now is to repair and rebuild faster than the enemy can carry out the next attacks,” Kharchenko worried.
