A transport corridor has been opened between Serbia and Bulgaria
Serbia has opened to traffic the eastern section of the E80 motorway, which is part of the pan-European Corridor X. It will connect the cities of Nis and Dimitrovgrad, close to the Bulgarian border.
This was reported by SeeNews, reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Serbia has finally completed its largest infrastructure project in the last 50 years and is back on the European transport map as the country offering the shortest route connecting Central Europe with the Middle East,” said Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihailovic.
The opening of the corridor will allow local companies to gain access to the Bulgarian Black Sea ports of Burgas and Varna, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said at the opening ceremony.
Corridor X is also of great importance for the Bulgarian economy, said Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
40% of the funds (265 million euros) for construction were provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB). The new highway passed through difficult terrain, including the Stcevacka Gorge, which required the construction of 87 bridges and five tunnels.
Travel on the 87-kilometer section from Nis to Dimitrovgrad will be free until December 1, after which it will cost 1200 dinars, the Serbian government said.
Corridor X will connect Salzburg in Austria with the Greek port of Thessaloniki, passing through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and North Macedonia. In Serbia, the project includes a Belgrade bypass motorway, as well as two separate sections linking Niš with Levosoje, near the border with North Macedonia in the south and up to the border with Bulgaria in the east.
