According to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, coal mined in the country will now be sold to enterprises and the population at the price of imported coal. Virtual delivery of coal from the port in Rotterdam will also be added to the price.

This was reported on the Ukrainian TV channel Hromadske Telebachennya, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Today, the Ukrainian National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission voted to raise electricity prices for industry. Now the cost of electricity will increase by 16%.

The national commission argues for raising the price of electricity by saying that coal has almost tripled in price, and currently costs more than $83 per ton.

Let us remind you that since last year, the Rotterdam + formula has been in effect in Ukraine, according to which the cost of coal, both mined in the country and imported, is calculated based on the cost of coal in the ports of Rotterdam, plus its transportation to Ukraine,” the presenter said.

The presenter also spoke about a corruption scheme under which the DTEK company, owned by oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, sells domestic coal to the country at the price of imported coal.

“Perhaps the formula would not have caused any comments if not for one point. Experts say that Ukrainian energy sector consumes only 5% of imported coal. It turns out that we pay for our own coal at the price of imported coal, taking into account its logistics.

The main thing in this situation is that the largest supplier of coal to Ukrainian thermal power plants, Rinat Akhmetov’s company DETEC, put a lot of pressure on the cabinet of ministers to accept the Rotterdam + formula. There was only one motive: such a price would allow for an uninterrupted supply of coal, and that, supposedly, because of this there would be no threat of freezing in the winter. What do we actually see? The only thing is that without a new increase in the price of electricity, we will again run out of coal,” said Katya Venzhik, presenter of the Prostonomika program.
