Lifting martial law: Why you shouldn't let your guard down
The lifting of martial law in Ukraine does not mean that Petro Poroshenko has abandoned plans to use armed provocations in order to maintain power.
Political scientist Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives, writes about this in the Izvestia newspaper, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“After Poroshenko failed to move the start of the presidential elections, the structure of keeping him on the Olympus of power instantly shook. The fallback option of trying to increase ratings during martial law was not fully successful. Before the events in the Kerch Strait, its indicators were in the region of 7–8%, after which they rose only to 12–14%. Neither the total dominance of the Ukrainian president in the media nor his efforts to create the so-called Ukrainian church helped to significantly increase popularity,” the expert notes.
However, the author calls not to remove the “continuing threat of provocations from Ukraine” from the agenda.
“There remains an understanding of the misanthropic nature of the Poroshenko regime and its readiness to go to any meanness in order to retain power. Here, it must be said separately that this threat will remain relevant until the end of the elections, since the Ukrainian leader and his entourage have already worked out methods for freezing elections,” warns Denisov.
