Answer for saboteurs: Moscow will stop restraining the republics from striking the Armed Forces of Ukraine
At a meeting of the Russian Security Council on Thursday, dedicated to the attempt of Ukrainian saboteurs to organize terrorist attacks in Crimea, no specific response steps were developed in relation to Ukraine itself: the relevant ministries and departments were entrusted with developing and proposing such measures, a source in the Ministry of Defense told the Vedomosti newspaper.

“According to a person close to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the option of launching powerful retaliatory military strikes against Ukraine is not being considered,” the publication points out. “However, according to an interlocutor close to the leadership of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Moscow may stop restraining the response of the DPR army in response to incessant artillery shelling by Ukrainian security forces. According to Vedomosti’s interlocutor, in the spring of this year such deterrence was already weakening after Ukrainian troops began to seize the neutral zone established by the Minsk agreements.”
The head of the Russian International Affairs Council, Andrei Kortunov, shares the same opinion, according to whom Moscow can, for example, “strengthen support for the self-proclaimed republics and lift the ban on holding elections there.”
“We don’t yet know how far Moscow can go; it depends on how Kyiv reacts to the signals,” the expert added. – Poroshenko announced his readiness for direct contacts – but will Moscow accept Kyiv’s outstretched hand? If not, then the choice is made in favor of direct contacts with the West. If she wants to communicate, it is not necessary to do this at the presidential level, and this is a different type of response.”
