Red herring: Bulgaria arrested the ideologist of Russophobia and expelled ten Russian diplomats
Bulgaria declared ten Russian diplomats persona non grata and gave them 72 hours to leave the country.
Earlier, ex-Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov was arrested in Sofia along with his media adviser Sevdalin Arnaudov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and former head of the financial committee Menda Stoyanova, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Bulgaria Vasil Georgiev presented an oral note on the expulsion of Russian diplomats to the Russian Ambassador in Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova. According to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, employees of the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria, declared “persona non grata,” were engaged in “activities not provided for by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”
The Russian Ambassador regarded this act of the Bulgarian authorities as extremely hostile:
“Moscow has the right to respond,” Mitrofanova said.
Interestingly, shortly before this, the Bulgarian special services arrested former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, a representative of the former pro-Western party “Citizens for the European Choice of Bulgaria” (GERB), which took a clear course towards the anti-Russian vector of the country’s development.
Along with him, prominent functionaries of the previous cabinet were arrested - media adviser Sevdalin Arnaudov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and former head of the financial committee Menda Stoyanova.
Representatives of the former elite were arrested on suspicion of misuse of EU funds based on an order from the European Public Prosecutor's Office. During the police action, searches were carried out at numerous addresses.
