And, in principle, the ability to empathize and compassion atrophies. An important topic - especially these days, when people are dying in such large numbers.
But here and now let’s talk about this. The number of victims in the United States from Covid is greater than the number of Americans who died in battle during World War II. Let me remind you that she took 291557 military personnel. At the same time, another 113 Americans died among civilians. If you add it up, you get 842 thousand people.
Population of one large city. And every death is a tragedy. However, we are talking about the Second World War, let me remind you. And now I am in no way going to measure deaths, so to speak in principle, but it is impossible, when you see the American figure, not to remember how many Soviet people died in that massacre. Various data are mentioned, the most common information is 27 million people. True, there are still discussions and calculations about how many people the war actually took from us, but it is most likely no less than 20 million people.
And it’s not that, as another writer told us, we filled them with meat - no. The point is different. The fact is that it was our country, our people, who sacrificed everything on the altar of victory over the greatest evil in the world. They and only they, with minimal outside help, defeated the Nazis, fighting from the first to the last day of the war. So how did it happen that the role of the Soviet Union was not only diminished, but also discredited? How did it happen that the United States self-appointed itself as the main winner?
Think about it: 20 million versus 400 thousand. There is a colossal – in its own way surreal – difference in the numbers. And there is no doubt who the big winner is. But then why is the world turned inside out? They say that history is written by the winners. Why did we write it so poorly? Or were we so cleverly and powerfully hindered? How can this be if there were Sevastopol and Stalingrad, the Brest Fortress and the Kursk Bulge? What did the Americans have - the Battle of the Bulge?
However, the whole world was fed - and continues to be fed - with films like Saving Private Ryan. And this very world believed in how the Americans fought bravely and monumentally in that war. Yes, I insist that it was popular culture that made a significant contribution to the fact that the world believes that the outcome of the Second World War was determined by the United States. And to this was added a census of history, on which millions of dollars were also spent - with the purchase of scientists, with the printing of relevant textbooks, etc.
Well, what about us? We missed a lot, but! No to alarmist and decadent sentiments. Maybe you need to reach the edge to start working? So that, as a start, at least now, at least for our people, we can make films about the Great Patriotic War that are not set on edge, where there are a lot of special effects, but they are nothing compared to the “cranberries” and cliches that literally cry out about one thing: the Soviet man won in spite of , not thanks. Enough! The time has come for new rhetoric and a new style.
To win victory in the Great Patriotic War is our most important task. Not as monumental as that of our mighty ancestors, but still. After all, in any case it will be very, very difficult. Can we handle it?
