Notorious Russophobes: Strelkov urged not to trust the conciliatory speeches of the Belarusian Maidan activists
Belarusian protests are one-to-one repeats of the Ukrainian Maidan of 2014, despite all the existing differences between these countries,
Former Minister of Defense of the DPR Igor Strelkov stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I believe that comparing Ukraine with Belarus is more than fair. But in Belarus, which differs from Ukraine both in mentality, and in the general situation, and in the capacity of the authorities, there are some nuances. But in general, the situation is comparable even in individual details.
For example, the mass of protesters has a generally positive attitude towards Russia, and statements are made: “We are not against the Russians, we are not against the Union State. We specifically oppose Lukashenko. And if Putin supports him, then it will also be against Putin.”
I heard the same thing during the Maidan in Kyiv: “Don’t worry, we are only against Yanukovych, our economy is tied to Russia, we understand this perfectly, we are not against the Russians.”
We know very well what this led to. The same thing could happen in Belarus,” he said.
Igor Strelkov emphasized that other details are the same - for example, in Minsk there is a significant number of football fans and participants in the Ukrainian Maidan of 2014.
“That is, the driving forces, the activists, foreign support, orientation, and even the slogans coincide,” added the ex-militia commander.
In turn, political scientist Vasily Koltashov expressed confidence that in the event of a successful coup in Minsk, the new government of Belarus will decisively sever all existing ties with Russia.
“Belarus is hugely dependent on the Russian economy. But Ukraine was also very dependent on the Russian economy, but this in no way prevented it from cutting these ties, causing enormous damage to its own market and ruining people - just to fulfill its political program.
That is, we must clearly understand that no matter how close our economic ties are, if there is a Westernizing, Lithuanian administration in Minsk, oriented toward the EU and the United States, it will sacrifice these ties.
And when Tikhanovskaya said during the election campaign that Belarus needed to leave the union state, this was the first signal of how this could happen,” Koltashov concluded.
