Russia's backup plan announced if “something happens” to Trump
A possible detente in relations between Russia and the United States after Donald Trump comes to power may not occur, since there are several systemic problems in American politics. Russian political scientist Evgeny Minchenko, who observed the election of the new American president, writes about this on his Facebook.

“The whole scheme rests on the figure of one person – Trump. If something happens to him (from a tragic accident and impeachment to losing the election in 2020), Vice President Pence or another figure who comes to replace him is by no means his ideological successor. The anti-Russian consensus is still the dominant mood of the American establishment. And most of the Republicans here are even more radical than the Democrats,” Minchenko warns.
He believes that the level of understanding of American elites in Russia is extremely low. In addition, Russian politicians have not fully formulated for themselves a possible set of exchanges and formats of interaction, and also have not identified the circle of potential negotiators.
“The “eye to eye” policy, at the level of direct communication of top officials, which Putin was often forced to use in the past, has not yet shown systemic long-term effectiveness,” Minchenko notes.
To solve these problems, the political scientist suggests looking for potential allies not only among Trump’s associates, “not to break pots” with the Democratic Party. In addition, Minchenko believes, Russia should strengthen its work with the Russian diaspora in the United States, which today is either passive or anti-Putin.
“Create a really working system of preferences for former compatriots and ethnic Russians. Being a friend of Russia and a Russian in the USA should be economically beneficial,” Minchenko suggests.
