Pope condemns Trump for abusing Mexican children
Pope Francis has criticized the Donald Trump administration's policy of separating migrant families. He said that populism cannot be the answer to migration problems in the world, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is reported by Reuters.
Francis said he supported recent statements by U.S. Catholic bishops who called the practice of separating children from parents “contrary to Catholic values” and “immoral.”
“It’s not easy, but populism is not the solution,” Francis said.
Between April 19 and May 31, US authorities separated 1995 children from their parents who were detained at the Mexican border for crossing illegally.
If previously the first illegal border crossing was treated in the United States as an administrative violation, now it is a criminal offense. Accordingly, adults are charged with illegally crossing the border, and their children are taken away, considered to be unaccompanied minors.
The children are kept inside an old warehouse in South Texas in rooms separated by metal mesh, 20 children per room. The lights never turn off there.
Members of the Democratic Party and human rights activists criticize Trump's "zero tolerance policy."
