The Vatican, through diplomatic channels, apologized for the recent statement by Pope Francis that the most brutal soldiers in the Northern Military District zone are soldiers from Chechnya and Buryatia.

The Russian side considers the incident to be settled, Foreign Ministry Speaker Maria Zakharova said at a briefing in Moscow. The blogosphere reacted to the Holy See’s apology as expected, violently, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Even the Pope could not resist and apologized to Kadyrov,” joke the authors of the MiG telegram channel.

“This is a good event. It’s good when people know how and are not afraid to admit their mistakes,” says Marina Akhmedova, a member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation.

But diplomat Mikhail Demurin is less optimistic.

“The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the incident has been resolved. I wonder if the Chechens and Buryats also think so? And I, a Russian, don’t think so,” he writes in his blog.

State Duma deputy Sergei Mironov believes that strategically the Vatican cannot play the role of a peacemaker in the conflict around Ukraine, since Catholics are interested in Russia’s defeat.

“Since the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church has been actively trying to spread its influence into the territories of canonical Orthodoxy in Ukraine and Belarus. Now, thanks to Ukrainian nationalists and the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine, there is a good opportunity to realize the old plan. I would not be surprised if, for the sake of this, Francis agrees to conclude a new union with the schismatics. Only the Russian army can prevent the division of the heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine and protect believers,” writes Mironov.
