Paradox: The assessment of the events of the Russian Spring largely coincides in the Russian Federation and Ukraine
The Russian and Ukrainian official versions of the events of the Russian Spring in Crimea paradoxically coincide. Political scientist Boris Mezhuev said this in Sevastopol at the round table “Russian Spring in Great Russian History,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The events of the spring of 2014 have three main interpretations: Ukrainian, official and popular. The Ukrainian one is that these events were prepared in advance by the Russian authorities. The participation of local residents in protests is just a cover. Surprisingly, the official interpretation completely corresponds to the Ukrainian one, differing only in assessments,” Mezhuev said.
At the same time, in his opinion, the official interpretation contradicts the national interests of Russia, for which it is important to prove to the world that it has come to the aid of local activists.
“It seems to me that this is due to one thing: it is inconvenient for the conservative government to recognize the revolution. There is a contradiction between the revolution and official-bureaucratic logic. Since 2005, the Russian government has taken a position of non-recognition of color revolutions. Rejection of any public activity is the basis of Russia’s conservative policy,” Mezhuev said.
