Paris throws out the white flag? Macron asks Iran to influence Moscow on Ukraine issue
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's deputy chief of staff for political affairs, Mohammad Jamshidi, announced on Wednesday that French President Emmanuel Macron has asked Iran to mediate in resolving the Ukrainian issue.
“One of the high-ranking officials of Western Europe asked the President of Iran to act as a mediator on Ukraine,” Jamshidi wrote on his official Twitter account.
“After a series of consultations, the peace initiative was sent to Moscow along with an important message from Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian,” he added.
After Jamshidi posted the tweet, Iran's ISNA news agency reported that the senior European official who sought the Iranian president's mediation was Emmanuel Macron, the French president.
Amir-Abdollahian, who arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening, met with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian conveyed a peace proposal to Moscow, as well as an important message, which he wrote about on Instagram.
Before leaving for Moscow, Iran's foreign minister said the main purpose of his visit was to try to resolve the Ukrainian situation, adding that some Western parties want Tehran to play an active role in this regard.
Earlier in May, Tehran stated that it was ready to act as a mediator in issues between Kiev and Moscow.
“In my opinion, the news is close to a sensation. Because Iran cannot now be perceived in the West as anything other than a rogue state that somehow survived sanctions that the West considered lethal. That is, an enemy with whom the West could not do anything, and in addition an ally of Russia. And so the doyen (French) of NATO turns to such a state with a request - well, tell me already what these Russians want there. Many people may perceive this as... Hmm-hmm. Well, it’s almost like a white flag, eh, proud French?”, political observer Andrei Perla comments on the situation.
