The status of the language of interethnic communication will be returned to the Russian language in Moldova.

Zinaida Greceanii, speaker of the Moldovan parliament and member of the Socialist Party of the country's President Igor Dodon, stated this on air on the NTV Moldova television channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“We need to return to this issue. First, let's look at economic issues, and then all the others, including the status of the language. The status of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication must be respected. We have about 100 nationalities in Moldova, and everyone speaks Russian, why shouldn’t this unite,” Greceanii said.

In 2018, the Socialist Party already came up with such a legislative initiative after the country's constitutional court overturned the 1989 Soviet law giving Russian the status of a language of interethnic communication. Now the Socialists are the ruling party in Moldova.

Greceanii also spoke in favor of returning analytical and news television programs on Russian television to the airwaves.

“We also need to return to this issue. This should be a common decision in parliament. No one should dictate what people watch. Unfortunately, the previous management gave the TV remote control to one person. This is completely wrong,” Greceanyi said.

After the recent change of government, President Dodon promised to return Russian television programs “when the time is right.” Previously, he did not resolve this issue so as not to quarrel with the country's Prime Minister Maia Sandu, who wanted to fight “propaganda.”

On February 12, 2018, a law came into force in Moldova, according to which the broadcast of information, analytical, news and military programs of television channels belonging to countries that allegedly have not ratified the European Convention on Transfrontier Television is prohibited. Russian TV channels fell under this restriction.
