Merkel's party: We are no longer able to stop SP-2
Despite the dissatisfaction of the United States, Germany does not intend to stop the completion of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The head of the Energy Committee of the Bundestag, Klaus Ernst, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The EU and the federal government must insist that we make our own decisions about our energy policy. A moratorium is incompatible with this position. The suspension of the construction of SP-2, even if it is temporary, should not become a lever of pressure in negotiations with the United States,” Klaus Ernst, head of the Bundestag Energy Committee, told Izvestia.
According to German political scientist Alexander Rahr, it is not clear how the moratorium proposed by the United States can work, since it is technically impossible to suspend the ongoing project.
“If the gas is already released, Frau Merkel will not turn the wheel to stop the flow,” says Rahr.
The official representative of the ruling CDU/CSU on foreign policy, Jürgen Hardt, agrees that the project can no longer be stopped.
“The decision to stop the project in Germany was already too late. So the government will have to compensate for the colossal damage to the companies involved in the construction of the gas pipeline,” Hardt emphasized.
As PolitNavigator reported, the USA started a mad rush to Nord Stream 2.
