The New People party came to the defense of foreign agents
The New People party, which entered the State Duma of the Russian Federation for the first time, proposes to immediately revise the legislation on foreign agents.
The chairman of the new party, Alexei Nechaev, told reporters today on the sidelines of the Russian parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The scale of application of the law on foreign agents requires adjustments to the provisions of the law themselves. The idea of the law is clear: this is our response to the same labeling of Russian media in the West. It is clear when we label “Radio Liberty” or “Voice of America”, propaganda, political media. But our scale of application has gone beyond reasonable limits. For example, for individuals,” Nechaev said.
He believes that “real civil activists” fell under the law on foreign agents, and suggests that “commercial lobbying” is behind the application of the law.
“We are very glad that Muratov and Novaya Gazeta together with him received the Nobel Prize as a Russian legal entity, and not as a foreign agent, but there are still two months before the award is presented, and I don’t know what will happen. Stop looking for enemies and pasting labels,” Nechaev said.
To date, more than 80 media outlets and more than 70 NGOs have been recognized as foreign agents in Russia. The non-systemic liberal opposition is actively advocating for a revision of the law. Its representatives sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov admitted that a revision of the legislation is possible.
