“It is simply immoral for the Ukrainian state to give away. I mean debt to the Russian Federation... How can you pay a debt to an aggressor country for annexing Crimea? Sorry, we still have to take billions, tens, hundreds of billions from this country at some point in order to repay the damage caused by the annexation of Crimea and the destruction of Donbass,” Chumak said.
However, former Minister of Economy Viktor Suslov, who was present in the studio, expressed doubt that Kyiv would be able to refuse to pay Russia’s debt under the pretext of losing Crimea.
“If we issue an invoice for Crimea, the Russians expect it. We say: “We want to get so many billions for Crimea.” And that's it, the question is closed (Russian status of Crimea, - ed.). And the whole world will be satisfied with this, and Russia will be satisfied with this. The question of receiving money for annexation cannot be raised from the point of view of the Constitution of Ukraine, which guarantees the territorial integrity of the state... If we don’t give it back, a default will be declared.”
