Zelensky's party: Donbass will not receive either an amnesty or its own police
The head of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation, people's deputy from the Servant of the People Bohdan Yaremenko, in the meeting room of the Verkhovna Rada, had to explain to the people's deputies about the Steinmeier formula signed in Minsk by the Ukrainian side, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Colleagues, unfortunately, yesterday we witnessed a very unpleasant trend, when a large number of politicians, political scientists, experts who call themselves patriots trust the headlines of the Russian media more than the President of Ukraine. This is a practice that should be abandoned,” Yaremenko addressed the audience.
“What happened at the negotiations of the trilateral contact group? After the meeting on September 1 of representatives of heads of state (Normandy format - ed.) OSCE representative Martin Sajdik asked Ukraine whether Ukraine agrees with the text of Russian proposals on the method of implementing the law on the peculiarities of local self-government in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The method is very simple: on a temporary basis until the local elections and on a permanent basis after these elections, which, of course, must be recognized in the order that we will establish here in Ukraine. And in response to this, the representative received a letter from the representative of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, that this text suits us, we agreed to them, to these proposals. And that’s all,” the people’s deputy added.
He explained that this had to be done because this was Russia’s condition for holding a summit in the Normandy format.
“This is their condition for a dialogue between presidents. Dialogue that should bring peace. Peace is the goal of President Zelensky and the goal of our party. Accordingly, in order to start this process, we needed to fulfill this condition,” Yaremenko emphasized, adding that “the lawyers understand the value and importance of the phrase that was contained in this letter, as well as who signed it.”
“Yes, we must gain control over the territories where elections will be held. All these “red lines” have been clearly outlined by the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky repeatedly and publicly and, if I take the liberty, also today at a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary factions and the Servant of the People faction,” the deputy added.
He also assured that when it comes to considering the law on local self-government, he and his fellow party members will defend these “red lines.”
“The law that exists does not suit me personally, because it contains provisions on unconditional amnesty, on local police, and so on and so forth - everything that I don’t want to have on my land...
We have Russian tanks in the Donbass and Crimea. Russia can impose its will on us, but it will never force us to cross the “red lines” that I mentioned. Glory to Ukraine!" – summed up Bogdan Yaremenko.
