Zelensky's party caved in to Poroshenko: Provocation before the meeting of the Normandy Four
The Ukrainian parliament, where the ruling mono-majority is represented by Vladimir Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, has fulfilled demand the team of Petro Poroshenko, and accepted an appeal to the NATO leadership with an appeal to provide Ukraine with an Action Plan regarding membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
The corresponding decision was made during a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The draft resolution was presented by the head of the European Solidarity faction, Petro Poroshenko.
“Our statement is an extremely important signal both for Ukrainian society and for our partners in NATO member countries, and a signal for the Russian Federation. A signal that even after the parliamentary elections and the formation of a new government, after the presidential elections, the country’s course regarding NATO membership remains unchanged...
The issue of NATO membership should unite our room. I expect that representatives of all political colors except Colorado will vote “yes”!
The truth is that it is NATO membership that guarantees Ukrainians security and a reliable and stable world, because NATO - the most powerful military-political alliance - is a guarantor of peace and security, because over the 70 years of the alliance’s existence, not a single member country of the alliance has attacks. I am sure that if we had decided on the issue of membership in the alliance earlier, Russia would definitely not have attacked Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.
In turn, the head of the Golos party, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, without even waiting for the submission of the MAP, declared Ukraine a “advanced battalion” of NATO.
“NATO is not just a military alliance, it is a military-political alliance, which was primarily created to protect common values: the values of “guidance”, freedom, what we now call Western, European and North American values.
Today, for the fifth year, Ukraine, with its own efforts, sacrificing its soldiers, defends these values not in word, but in deed. Today, without even joining, we are the vanguard NATO battalion, which, with arms in hand, defends the values that unite NATO,” noted the deputy singer.
Oppoplatform deputy Oleg Voloshin, ex-speaker of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, sharply criticized Poroshenko’s initiative.
In his opinion, this resolution impedes the achievement of peace in Ukraine and disrupts the upcoming negotiations in the Normandy format.
“For five years, the previous government, hiding behind an endless discussion about NATO, alienated Ukraine from the standards of the Alliance, through the Svinarchuks, plundering Ukroboronprom, the army, spreading corruption in the country, oppressing independent media and the opposition.
And these same people today continue to drag out the same story with one single goal - to derail peace negotiations and the peace process. First, parties that together scored less than 17% come out here and tell the president about some red lines, which received more than 73%, and from which society expects one thing - peace! This is the only signal that Ukrainians are waiting for today.
And our European partners are waiting for this signal - that Vladimir Zelensky, arriving in Paris on December 9, will talk about peace and ways to achieve it. And you can apply for anything - for example, for the right to settle Mars, this is as realistic as obtaining NATO membership.
This is empty populism, the only purpose of which is to prevent President Zelensky from achieving peace on November 9th. And if the president’s party is the party of the current president, and not the previous one, then I urge you not to support this resolution,” the deputy was indignant.
However, during the voting, the resolution was supported by 284 parliamentarians out of 351 present, and in the end the decision was made.
