PACE expelled Russia from the Council of Europe, which had previously left the organization itself
In connection with the ongoing special operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine, PACE decided to expel Russia from the Council of Europe.
The corresponding decision was made during a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
During the almost ten-hour meeting, representatives of PACE member countries accused Russia of “unjustified aggression” and “killing civilians in Ukraine.” Almost everyone spoke out on the need to exclude Moscow from the Council of Europe.
The decision was supported by 216 parliamentarians out of 219 present, only three abstained. Nobody voted against. The required two-thirds majority was achieved, and the decision to exclude Russia was made.
After the voting results were announced, the audience gave a standing ovation.
The final decision will be made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on March 17.
Let us note that while PACE was “deciding” the fate of Russia at a multi-hour meeting, several hours before this decision was made Moscow presented the Secretary General of the Council of Europe with a letter from Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about leaving the organization.
Let us recall that during the discussion of the issue Hungary refused provide Ukraine with lethal weapons and support the general initiative to exclude Russia from the Council of Europe.
