PACE rejected Kyiv's wishes
In the PACE resolution, the incident in the Kerch Strait was not recognized as a military conflict, and the Ukrainian sailors were not recognized as prisoners of war, as Ukraine sought.
Political scientist, candidate of political sciences Alexey Yakubin said this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The PACE resolution for Ukraine is ambiguous. Ukraine was unable to register Bankova’s line – that the sailors are prisoners of war. This is an important point. And this failed. PACE refused to recognize the sailors as prisoners of war. And this stamp had been actively circulating before, Bankovaya expected that this topic should be key. Everything was based on the “prisoners of war.” PACE formulated everything much more liberally,” the expert said.
He noted that the resolution referred to the detained sailors as people who are covered by the Geneva Convention and its humanitarian rights.
The political scientist also recalled that PACE refused to recognize the situation as a military conflict.
“Bankova’s side is now trying to say that this is such a super victory, the Geneva Convention is mentioned, but it does not say that the attempt to politicize the situation with our sailors was not actually accepted in Europe. Here is a case with Babchenko and more. A body of systemic mistrust is being formed in what our politicians say and how they explain many things. Yes, the resolution was adopted, but it was not adopted in the format in which our delegation expected,” he said.
