In a resolution and recommendation, which is based on a report by Rosa Hoffmann (Hungary, EPP/CD), the Assembly noted that only 25 of the 47 member states have ratified the Council of Europe's own charter for the promotion of linguistic diversity, and also that some of them have not submitted reports to their supervisory authority. organ.
Parliamentarians urged governments to cooperate with the charter monitoring mechanism, as well as a range of other activities to support minority or regional language speakers throughout Europe.
In addition, PACE called on Council of Europe member states to do more to protect minority languages and called for the creation of an annual prize for countries that actively promote their use.
The resolution was reportedly adopted by an anonymous vote.
