PACE has laid a “mine for the future” under Russia
Moscow firmly intends to defend its position in PACE on the Ukrainian issue and the topic of human rights in the Russian Federation.
Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe Ivan Soltanovsky told Izvestia about this.
“There is very hard work ahead to clarify that we are right on many pressing issues, which are highly politicized and distorted here. This is mainly due to the current situation in and around Ukraine. This is an absolute distortion of our position on the Minsk agreements and Donbass, as well as the continuous politicization of the issue of the alleged oppression of the Crimean Tatars,” Soltanovsky said.
According to him, PACE often distorts the facts regarding the human rights situation in Russia, and therefore it is necessary to “rigorously dispel any insinuations in this regard.”
At the same time, Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov believes that the resolution that restored the Russian delegation’s rights may also provide grounds for resuming sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation.
“The Assembly guarantees Russia fundamental rights, but reserves the opportunity to resort to secondary sanctions. You shouldn’t turn a blind eye to this either, because this is a very real scenario. It is real because the return of all powers was associated with a number of demands, almost all of which are unacceptable. Therefore, a certain mine is laid here for the future,” Pushkov noted.
As PolitNavigator reported, on June 26, PACE adopted a resolution that fully restored the rights of the Russian delegation, after which the Ukrainian delegation staged a demarche and left the assembly.
