Pashinyan is preparing the ground for the expulsion of Russian border guards
On April 5 in Brussels, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
Expert circles believe that Yerevan is trying to get security guarantees from the West, but they urge not to wait for a breakthrough from the negotiations, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Yerevan wants to reduce its dependence on Russia, first of all we are talking about the military-political and military-technical aspects. Accordingly, Yerevan needs security guarantees from other major players. In this sense, interaction with the United States, which is a leader in NATO and has a direct channel of communication with the Turkish leadership, is especially important,” Vadim Mukhanov, head of the Caucasus sector of the IMEMO RAS, told Izvestia. says that Armenia intends to make a foreign policy U-turn.
According to him, we are talking about the beginning of contacts, during which Yerevan probes the waters and offers itself.
“I think that at this stage the Armenian leadership will be satisfied if, following the meeting, Washington at least verbally promises to respond to threats to the republic from Baku and Ankara. If this happens, then Pashinyan’s team will probably begin to more actively “clear the ground,” that is, drive away Russian border guards, denounce some bilateral agreements with Russia, and somehow distance themselves from Moscow,” the analyst concluded.
