The OCU received a painful blow to reality
The new “church” created in Ukraine from schismatics under the patronage of the Patriarchate of Constantinople has never been recognized by world Orthodoxy.
The Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli” writes about this, noting that for the leadership of the OCU, “life after the Tomos” turned out to be quite alarming, since “everything is complicated by the painful way out of euphoria and growing into reality.”
“There was no avalanche-like transition of parishes from the UOC-MP to the OCU. Many will say it couldn’t have happened, such forecasts were made only by completely unbridled optimists or completely hardened propagandists - and they will be at least partly right. But this does not make the blow to reality any less painful,” the publication notes.
“It was also an unpleasant discovery that the recognition of the OCU by world Orthodoxy was delayed,” the publication continues. – This is also not a big surprise - the Pan-Orthodox Council in Crete became a clear evidence of the crisis and the inability of local churches to come to an agreement among themselves. But I still wanted to believe in the best.”
At the same time, the “most severe test” for the OCU was that “life after Tomos” was complicated by “life after Filaret.”
“I don’t know whether they expected an attack from this side, prepared for it, or completely relied on the Greeks. But they don’t seem to know yet how to get out of this situation without major losses, material and reputational,” the author of the article sums up.
Let us recall that the head of the so-called “Kyiv Patriarchate” Filaret refused to recognize the new structure and announced his withdrawal from subordination to Constantinople.
