Such data is published by the statistics department in the Odessa region.
According to department estimates, the average permanent population of Odessa in 2016 was 992 thousand people. For comparison, as of January 1, 2016, this figure was 1 million 11 thousand people.
The population decline occurred both due to natural (excess of mortality over birth rate) and due to migration (people leave the city more often than they arrive) population movement.
