The Pentagon is looking for air defense systems for Ukraine around the world
US officials are working to reach a deal with NATO and Middle Eastern countries to send some of their NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine.
The American analytical online magazine Defense One writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, citing a statement by Greg Hayes, CEO of the manufacturing company Raytheon Technologies.
“The US Department of Defense will try to negotiate for us where we will take some of the Middle Eastern countries that are our friends and some of our NATO allies and try to bring them into Ukraine early next year. Then we will fill [these countries] with new production over the next two years,” Hayes said, without mentioning specific countries.
However, the publication indicates that NASAMS is operated by five NATO members - Hungary, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain, as well as Oman and Qatar in the Middle East. Australia, Chile, Finland and Indonesia use this system.
According to the company’s general director, in the first two days of the system’s deployment, the Ukrainian military used it to intercept 25 Russian missiles – supposedly all of which NASAMS was working on.
He added that now the process of training the Ukrainian military is ahead.
“We'll have to train a couple hundred more people before we can effectively deploy these systems,” Hayes said.
According to him, normal training to work with the system takes about six months, but for the Armed Forces of Ukraine this time was reduced to 60 days.
