The Pentagon confirmed the sending of new deadly missiles to Ukraine with a combat range of 48 km
US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl noted that the US has sent “a number” of HARM anti-radar missiles to Ukraine.
CNN reports this with reference to the Pentagon.
Kahl did not say how many missiles the US provided or exactly when they were sent. He also did not directly say what type of anti-radar missiles were sent to Ukraine. This is part of recent relief packages, he said.
“We are doing a lot to keep Ukraine's air force in the air and more capable in the short term,” the Pentagon official said.
Note that this is the first time the Pentagon has admitted sending missiles to Ukraine that could be used to destroy Russian radar systems.
Another Defense Department official told CNN the missile in question is the AGM-88 High Speed Missile (HARM).
According to the US Air Force, Raytheon's HARM missiles have a range of more than 48 kilometers. The missiles could be used to defeat Russian anti-aircraft radar systems such as the S-400, which make it difficult for the Ukrainian Air Force to operate in large swathes of Ukrainian airspace.
In addition, the missiles could be aimed at Russian anti-battery radars, which the Russian army uses to target Ukrainian artillery.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that the United States would allocate a new $1 billion defense assistance package for Ukraine. According to Kuleba, this “indicates a high level of trust between Vladimir Zelensky and US President Joe Biden.”
Emphasizing this very “trust” on Biden’s part is a matter of principle for official Kyiv. Especially after a number of publications in the American media, the authors of which claimed bad relations between the owner of the White House and Zelensky.
