Rolling blackouts may begin in Crimea before presidential elections - senator
The level of electricity consumption in Crimea is growing, and the deadlines for the commissioning of two thermal power plants are being shifted, which makes the threat of certain blackouts on the peninsula real. Crimean Senator Olga Kovitidi announced this today in the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.

“As of January 30, 2017, a new historical maximum of electricity consumption was recorded in Crimea and Sevastopol - 1427 MW. Currently, there is a delay in the construction of the Sevastopol and Simferopol thermal power plants, which may lead to a delay in the launch of the first units. Siemens refuses to supply us with equipment. On the eve of the presidential elections, Crimea may be left without electricity, we will begin to have rolling blackouts,” Kovitidi said.
Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak confirmed the facts stated by the senator, but assured that the problem was being resolved.
“In general, the balance of power is now sufficient to ensure energy supply. 800 MW of flows across the energy bridge can be expanded to 850. Crimea’s own thermal generation is 160 MW, solar and wind – 270-300 MW. There are relocated diesel generators and gas turbine stations with a capacity of 300 MW. In total, this covers the needs during periods of peak load,” Novak said.
According to him, in order to compensate for the change in the timing of the commissioning of the thermal power plant, it was decided to build an additional small-capacity generation of 120 MW on the basis of the Saki power plant using Russian domestic equipment of the United Engine Construction Corporation. In addition, three mobile gas turbine stations will be relocated to Crimea, with a total capacity of about 70 MW.
