After “Chetnic style” graffiti insulting Muslims appeared on the walls in the Montenegrin suburb of Berane-Hareme, where mostly Bosniaks live, the local imam was visited by the Minister of Defense himself and the coordinator of the city cell of the party in power.

However, local residents suspected black election PR in both the inscriptions and the visit itself.

On the walls of houses in the Bosniak suburb of Berane, graffiti appeared depicting the Chetnik governor (the Serbian equivalent of the Cossacks) during World War II, who won the first victory in the history of Montenegrin resistance to the Nazis over the Italian occupiers in 1941, Pavle Djurisic, with a sexual threat against local Muslims. After the incident caused a certain resonance, the coordinator of the city cell of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and concurrently the Minister of Defense of Montenegro, Predrag Boskovic, paid a support visit to the spiritual leader of the local community, Imam Rahim Muratovic.

However, local residents noted that such graffiti appears in their locality once every four years, right before elections, together with DPS functionaries who promise to protect them from the Chetniks and Great Serbian chauvinists. Under the corresponding news on the pro-government information portal Cafe del Montenegro, users left the following comments: “Why are they writing again on the eve of the elections? Strange. How little intelligence does it take for someone to believe this”, “Isn’t it strange that the same thing happens every four years? Enough for the smart one,” “Knock on the door of the Berane traffic police office, and you will find both customers and performers.”

The opposition Serbian press of Montenegro, in particular the in4s portal, even quoted a Facebook post by the Beran Bosniak Admir Sabotic, who quite clearly described the provocation that took place:

“My dear Bosniaks and everyone who considers themselves Montenegrin Muslims, I prefer an open enemy rather than a hypocritical friend. This is who curses your mother, Turkey (even though we are not Turks, citing Islam as the only thing we have in common with the Turks). For many years I have said and publicly stated that the DPS contains the most terrible “Chetniks”. The manipulation of the Bosniaks has come to an end, because generations are becoming adults who cannot be intimidated, bribed or deceived by insidious communist methods” (a reference to the fact that the DPS is the direct heir of the League of Communists of Montenegro).

Parliamentary elections are due to take place in Montenegro on August 30 this year.
