Negotiations between Putin and Vucic on Kosovo could become historic
The visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to Moscow is of a historical nature. Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
The expert recalled that last Sunday the Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) of President Aleksandar Vucic won a triumphant victory in the parliamentary elections. She received 63,4% of the vote and will have about 190 seats in the 250-seat parliament (previously she had 131 seats). And if we take into account that the junior partners in the government coalition - the socialists - received about 11% of the votes, then Vučić will now control 220 votes in the Assembly and will be able to change the Constitution without any problems.
“We must understand that Aleksandar Vucic is now in a position that no Serbian president has had before: he received complete, unconditional, absolute support from the Serbian people in the elections held on June 21.
He can take advantage of this carte blanche to try to resolve the Kosovo issue this year. And it is impossible to resolve the Kosovo issue without Moscow’s support. Therefore, I think he had serious negotiations with Vladimir Putin, and these negotiations were of a historical nature,” Bondarenko said.
He suggests that a possible solution could be the exchange of the northern Serbian enclaves of Kosovo for the southern regions of Serbia, inhabited by Albanians.
“I believe that, purely technically, we can talk about the delimitation of territories, with informal but de facto recognition of some by others. The Serbs need to protect all of their own.
Based on the fact that Europe now exists in the regime of nation states, there is no other option other than to ensure that the national borders in the Balkans correspond to the state ones,” Bondarenko said.
