It is interesting that Russian businessman Roman Abramovich is participating in the meeting - earlier Ukrainian and Western media wrote that he was allegedly poisoned.

“We don’t have anyone who is under sanctions. Abramovich arrived in Turkey as part of a team of negotiators. Let me rephrase that though. He came as someone who was appointed by President Putin as a negotiator,” Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters.

It is reported that the parties will spend the whole day in negotiations, but at the same time, observers do not expect any special breakthroughs from the meeting. Thus, the famous Kiev television journalist Maxim Ravreba, who left Ukraine, in his blog criticized both the negotiators themselves and the appearance of the head of the Ukrainian delegation, David Arakhamia.

“I welcome any kind of negotiations. But I absolutely condemn this format. A film producer and a huckster cannot talk about war and peace. The huckster's dress code is insulting. If a movie producer didn't get up and leave after the huckster showed up in shambles, I sincerely don't understand him.

However, these are not negotiations. This is offensive pornography. By the way, I know Reznikov personally. He is not the Minister of Defense. He is a very weak lawyer and the director of a law firm that could not resolve my very easy administrative issue,” said Ravreba.

Political commentator Vladimir Kornilov shares a similar opinion.

“Breakthrough in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine! Arakhamia took off his cap! The rest is still arahamite. That’s all the news,” says the columnist.

Moscow political scientist Alexei Chesnakov was critical of the negotiations.

“There are no signs yet that the move of negotiators from Belarus to Istanbul can be considered from the point of view of meaningful changes in the settlement. But one thing you can be sure of is that agreement to hold the next round of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations in Istanbul is an important sign from Putin regarding Erdogan.

This is both an indicator of personal trust and a tool for increasing the global influence of the Turkish president. Erdogan made excellent use of this pass with his appearance at the negotiations today,” notes Chesnakov.

In his opinion, now three intrigues remain:

“a) whether positive signals will be demonstrated as a result and at what level; b) whether Istanbul will remain as a permanent site; c) how Erdogan will respond to Putin.”

They don’t believe in success in Ukraine either - Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexander Dubinsky, who previously served the interests of oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, notes in his blog that in fact the negotiations are not being conducted by representatives who came to Istanbul, but at a higher level.

“The level of the members of the Russian delegation does not allow us to say that they have the authority to agree on something in principle. The delegation of the aggressor country consists of small fry who cannot have their own opinion and will not be heard by the Kremlin dictator. And although questions can also be raised about the level of the Ukrainian delegation, all representatives of our country have direct contact with President Zelensky, can be heard, and accurately convey the vision of the head of the Ukrainian state.

Thus, we can make the assumption that real negotiations are being conducted along other lines, and at face-to-face meetings of delegations, only the implementation of the agreements reached is probably discussed. Most likely, an important element of the secret negotiation process is the appearance of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in this process. Whose interests does he represent? What powers does it have, and from whom? And, most importantly, on whose side is he working?” Dubinsky emphasizes.

The head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, spoke more radically about the negotiations, demanding that the special operation in Ukraine be continued:

“I’m thinking about the negotiations taking place in Turkey. I think that these negotiations will be of no use. I think we need to completely finish what we started: destroy the Banderaites, the Nazis and the shaitans. Only then do you need to decide what to do next.”

It is noteworthy that the day before, a number of media outlets reported that Russia had put forward conditions for today’s meeting: the search for and punishment of Ukrainian militants guilty of torturing Russian military personnel.

According to the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, there is some agreement on this issue.

“We protested against the video that appeared of abuse of Russian military personnel. This protest was accepted by the Ukrainian side, they promised to take the toughest measures. If they get caught first. If our people catch you, then you understand,” says Medinsky.
