Cutting off water to Crimea as a condition for Ukraine’s accession to NATO – Fukuyama
Ukraine will have a chance to join NATO if it captures the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions during a counteroffensive.
Stanford University professor and failed forecaster Francis Fukuyama said this at the Kiev Security Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today, only Ukraine’s membership in NATO with Article 5 can restrain the resumption of Russia’s war in the future. NATO membership will become real if, thanks to a counter-offensive, Ukraine returns the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and the Black Sea coast. This region is critical to Ukraine's negotiating position. Firstly, this will give Ukraine the opportunity to export from the Black Sea ports, secondly, it will save Ukrainian citizens who are now trapped there, and thirdly, it will cut off Russia’s opportunities for supplies to Crimea.
The return of these territories to Ukraine will block Russia’s land corridor to Crimea and put the Kerch Bridge under serious threat. In addition, the Ukrainians will be able to again block the canal that supplies water to the peninsula,” the futurist reasoned.
“It is possible that the Ukrainian counter-offensive will be extremely successful, and Russian forces will fail along the entire front, but a more modest and more realistic scenario is the return of the Kherson region and Zaporozhye to Ukraine before the end of the summer,” Fukuyama said.
