"Peremoga" with British boats turns into a credit pumpkin
While there are no details of the Ukrainian-British memorandum on the allocation of funds for the Ukrainian Naval Forces, it is impossible to say how beneficial it is for Ukraine.
UIAMP Director Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the Politeka Online TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Zelensky said that Ukraine and Great Britain signed a memorandum on the allocation of 1,4 billion dollars for the Ukrainian Navy. The topic is very interesting, the amount is huge. But I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this is only a memorandum, not an agreement, this is a declaration of intent. And what are the conditions, what kind of money is this? Where are the details? I doubt that we will ever receive anything in money, that they will give us such an amount to build our ships.
Most likely, we are talking about the supply of used British ships, as we see with American boats. Perhaps this is even good, but the fleet needs to be developed. After the annexation of Crimea, we actually do not have a fleet.
The second thing that alarmed me was that this memorandum was signed with the UK Export Credit Agency. Maybe it's also an interest-bearing debt? Maybe another loan? We'll wait for the details. The authorities are trumpeting on all corners about what a huge victory this is, but lest this victory once again turn into a pumpkin.
We will wait for a specific agreement, and then we will figure out what kind of help this is, whether Ukraine needs it on such conditions, or whether it’s cheaper for us to build the same ships from our budget, interest-free,” the political scientist said.
