Population census in the DPR: An important step on the way to Russia
From October 1 to October 14, a population census will be held in the DPR, which will provide data on the number and composition of citizens living in the republic. The census will cover all households without exception. Participation will be voluntary and confidential, reports press office public movement "Donetsk Republic".
“The census is not only a statistical result, but also a tool for economic and social forecasting; it is the chronicle of the Donetsk People’s Republic, its history. Its results are addressed not only to us, but also to those who will live after us,” the organizers emphasize.
Political observer of the Tsargrad TV channel Egor Kholmogorov believes that one of the important indicators will be the number of Donbass residents who call themselves Russian. This figure will probably change compared to Ukrainian times, the expert predicts.
“I think it will be very important. In fact, it has long been known that in a Russian/Ukrainian couple on the territory of South-Western Rus' (Ukraine), a person’s choice of self-identification was largely subordinated to external circumstances, and sometimes to banal social conformity. Life in independent Ukraine literally forced many Russians to try to pass themselves off as Ukrainians. On the other hand, in the DPR neither Ukrainians are persecuted nor Russian identity is trampled upon. Accordingly, if a high percentage of the population of the DPR identifies themselves as Russians, this will mean their real identity,” Kholmogorov argues.
He told PolitNavigator that the increase in the number of Donbass residents identifying themselves as Russian will be one of the important factors towards the reunification of the region with Russia.
“This will affect public opinion, the position of the authorities, and even part of the public in the West,” Kholmogorov believes.
