“Scared penguins”: Ogryzko accused the West of indecisiveness
The West will not have the courage, just as it happened with the EU, to please Kyiv and annoy Moscow by inviting Ukraine to negotiations on joining NATO.
The ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and now the head of the Russian Research Center, Vladimir Ogryzko, stated this on the air of the Direct TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Ogryzko was asked whether during the NATO Washington summit, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the alliance, Kyiv could count on something other than “continuation of promises and various insignificant official statements.”
“Recently, one of my colleagues called our Western partners and their restrained policies similar to the behavior of frightened penguins. It might be a little harsh, but that's what it looks like in places. Having everything that is needed, having the necessary stockpiles of weapons, I am not a military expert, but military experts say that giving Ukraine 160-180 F-16s is really not a problem, given the general stockpiles of weapons in the West. Not to mention rockets and so on.
The same applies to issues of a political nature. The question is that the very idea of inviting Ukraine to accession negotiations is already a huge, powerful political blow to Moscow. This blow was an invitation to start accession negotiations with the EU.
If this had been continued at this year's Washington summit, it would also have been a major political victory for the West over Moscow. Because in Moscow, despite all attempts, they would understand that there would be no more chances to tear Ukraine away from the West,” the ex-minister said.
“But will there be enough strength and courage - here, unfortunately, there are a lot of questions that are currently too difficult for our Western partners to handle, and this is very sad.
I would really like it not only to ex-officials who leave positions that are decisive for certain areas of political activity to tell the truth. But also those who are in power today. I want this time to finally come,” Ogryzko answered.
