Coup in Sudan. The expert explained who is more profitable than Russia
Further development in one direction or another of the situation in Sudan, where the military removed the government from power, depends on the United States.
As reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent, Sergei Seregichev, associate professor of the Department of General History of the Faculty of History of the Russian State University for the Humanities, stated this.
“The key actor in the Sudanese drama is Washington. Much depends on whether the US continues to unequivocally condemn the coup or softens its position. If they decide to return sanctions in order to support civil activists, this will lead to a total socio-economic catastrophe in Sudan,” the expert told Kommersant.
In his opinion, Russia will benefit from any development of events, but Moscow is more interested in the military remaining in power, and the less Western influence there is in Sudan, the better.
In turn, the publication recalls that the aggravation of the political situation was accompanied by a colossal deterioration in the economic situation in the country.
“After the fall of the al-Bashir regime, the United States removed Sudan from the list of states that support terrorism. This opened the way for the implementation of many investment projects and receiving international financial assistance. The new government carried out reforms under IMF supervision in an attempt to attract foreign financing and reduce Sudan's external debt. As a result of the reforms, the country's annual inflation rate exceeded 400% in June. This became the reason for new unrest throughout the country,” the newspaper points out.
