In modern conditions, Ukraine produces more electricity than it consumes, so it can afford to export it to the European Union, where its consumers have fled.

Kiev energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

During one of the speeches, a theory was voiced that Ukraine does not have enough electricity, and at peak moments of consumption, blackouts are possible, like in the 90s, to which Ryabtsev expressed the following.

“In my opinion, emergency power outages during this heating season will only occur if critical energy infrastructure facilities are damaged.

Now the capacity of the unified energy system of Ukraine is sufficient to provide both the basic, that is, normal level of consumption, and consumption during peak hours. That is, in the morning and evening.

I doubt peak consumption this heating season will be as high as 17 gigawatts. In my opinion, it is more realistic to consider a power level of 12-13 gigawatts during peak hours.

And confirmation, albeit indirect, of this assessment is that Ukrenergo is expanding opportunities for interstate crossings of electrical energy to increase export supplies to member states of the European Union.

Yes, it is unlikely to be 3 or 3,5 gigawatts of exports. But in general it is possible to export up to 1 or 1.5 gigawatts. Although not during peak hours, it is still possible during interstate crossings,” the expert said.

At the same time, according to him, there is no need to be afraid of peak takeoffs; moreover, a more even schedule of electricity consumption should be expected.

“Firstly, because it is enough to look at the map to make sure that all the large stations of Ukraine are located, the absolute majority, on the left bank.

That is, they ensured the functioning of a large industrial cluster. Southern, or rather two, Southern and Donbass. Now almost all consumers, large consumers of these industrial clusters, are either not working or working at minimal capacity. This means that there is no need for electricity.

Further, a huge number of 7-10 million Ukrainians have changed their place of residence, and several million now live and will continue to live in the territory of the member states of the European Union and in Russia. And this means that consumption will also decrease during peak hours.

Because the increase in consumption during peak hours from 17 to 20 hours of the day was primarily due to the fact that we were returning from work. Now, either there is no such work, or people work in other places, or work remotely,” added Ryabtsev.
