The first Belovezhskaya meeting took place in the spring of 1991: New facts about the collapse of the USSR
The State Committee for the State of Emergency (GKChP) was created to prevent the liquidation of the Soviet Union, which was scheduled by Yeltsin and Gorbachev for August 20. This was stated today at a press conference in Moscow by Sergei Baburin, who in 1991 was a deputy of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR.

“In the spring, at the plenum of the Central Committee, it was not possible to remove Gorbachev and it became obvious that in society the understanding of his treacherous nihilistic role had already matured and in the fall he would definitely be removed from the post of president and the post of general secretary. The neoliberals played ahead of the curve. They did not wait for the congress at which they were supposed to discuss the union treaty, but behind the scenes they scheduled its signing for August 20,” Baburin said.
As the leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov said, the final decision on the collapse of the Union was made at a secret meeting of Gobrachev, Yeltsin and Nazarbayev on July 30. However, a leak occurred and the State Emergency Committee was created.
“Yeltsin and Gorbachev committed a crime that has no statute of limitations that needs to be investigated. The State Emergency Committee was used in all union republics. Even the nationalist leaders in the Baltic states, Moldova and the Transcaucasus took up their cause. The country was ready for this. Only in Moscow did Yeltsin’s entourage and everyone who was soldered here speak out against it,” Zyuganov said.
According to Baburin, the first attempt to destroy the USSR was made in the spring of 1991.
“Attempt Belovezhiya No. 1 was made in the spring of 1991, when Yeltsin tried to persuade Nazarbayev, Kravchuk and Dementey (chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus) to sign an agreement on the creation of the CIS and the liquidation of the Soviet Union. Dementey and Nazarbayev categorically opposed this; Kravchuk, after hesitating, supported them. Yeltsin, as he liked to do, said: I was joking,” Baburin said.
