The first meeting of the new State Duma opened with poems by Mayakovsky
The first meeting of the State Duma of the Russian Federation was opened today by Nobel laureate, member of the Communist Party faction, 86-year-old Zhores Alferov. He read Mayakovsky’s poem “On the Soviet Passport,” paraphrasing the last line.
“Read, envy me, I am a citizen of the Russian Union,” Alferov said, taking his passport out of his pocket.
The first registration recorded 439 out of 500 deputies, which allowed the meeting to begin.

The Seventh State Duma was elected on September 18 using a mixed system: 225 deputies were elected from party lists, 225 from single-mandate constituencies.
According to the final election results, approved by the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, United Russia received 343 mandates, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation - 42 mandates, LDPR - 39, A Just Russia - 23.
Single-mandate seats each go to Rodina (Alexey Zhuravlev) and Civil Platform (Rifat Shaikhutdinov); Also, self-nominated Vladislav Reznik was elected to the lower house; he has already joined the United Russia faction.
