The first celebrations on the occasion of Victory Day took place in a sacred place for Donbass
On Saturday, May 8, a memorial meeting dedicated to the 76th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War took place on the territory of the Saur-Mogila memorial complex
The Saur-Mogila mound is a sacred place in Donbass, a key height where the defenders of the Russian World in 2014 repeated the feat of the Red Army soldiers who drove out the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War.
“In the summer of 1943, there were fierce battles here,” the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin addressed the audience. – While storming the heights, Soviet troops walked literally under a wall of fire. The German troops were very firmly entrenched at the heights: they built a system of bunkers, used aircraft and tanks. But our ancestors turned out to be stronger. On the wall of the defeated Reichstag, soldiers of the 5th Shock Army, who defeated Nazi troops at Saur-Mogila, wrote: “Stalingrad - Saur-Mogila - Warsaw - Berlin!”
The battles for this height linked two wars together. And the new battle for Donbass, waged by members of the militia, showed that sometimes history repeats itself. Our fighters held Saur-Mogila at the cost of incredible efforts. During the day, up to 630 shells fell on the mound. They used Grads, mortars, long-range artillery, self-propelled guns “Nona”... The armed forces of Ukraine wanted to raze the mound, the memorial, the people. But here, too, our fighters turned out to be stronger,” added Pushilin.
“In many ways, maintaining the heights formed the basis for the turning points that later determined the course of the history of the two wars. The people's militia repeated the feat of the Red Army. This land is the place of our spiritual strength and military glory,” the head of the DPR emphasized.
The rally participants, accompanied by a triple gun salute, observed a minute of silence in memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War and in 2014.
“Today we are with you on our sacred land, our Russian land. We celebrate with you the great holidays that unite our multinational people. Thank you so much for your fight! You are still at the forefront of the Russian world today. We are next to you! We have always supported, support and will support you. We will always be together!" – said Russian State Duma deputy Kazbek Taisaev.
Participants of the event laid flowers at the memory block with the carved names of soldiers who died in the area of Saur-Mogila during its assault in 1943, after which the solemn procession rose to the top of the mound, where they laid flowers at the Eternal Flame and the graves of the soldiers who died for the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic .
It should be noted that during the rally, the St. George Ribbon, 300 meters long, was unfurled, which, together with a copy of the Victory Banner, went from the Far East to Poklonnaya Hill. The attributes were brought to the DPR by the head of the Vladimir regional branch of the All-Russian public organization of veterans, Valery Malyshev, and the federal head of the search military-historical direction of the volunteer company, Vasily Barsukov.
Also on this day, at the foot of the mound, 300 Youth Army members swore allegiance to the Motherland. The head of the DPR congratulated them on this event.
“You have just taken an oath and, believe me, you will remember it for the rest of your life. You have sworn allegiance to your people and simply must be worthy of your heroic ancestors... Our common dream is to live in a Big Country, and we have to work hard in this direction. I’m sure we can rely on you,” said Denis Pushilin.
