The first container ship successfully sailed along the Northern Sea Route
The Danish container ship Venta Maersk with a cargo of frozen fish, the first to travel along the Northern Sea Route, arrived today at the port of St. Petersburg, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is evidenced by data from the specialized website marinetraffic.com. The ship began unloading at the port of destination.
As the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East reported on its website, the ship, capable of transporting 3600 standard containers, left Vladivostok on August 23.
With the help of Venta icebreakers, Maersk traveled with a cargo of Russian fish and electronics from the Republic of Korea along the Northern Sea Route from Asia to Europe. This is a trial passage designed to explore the possibilities of the Arctic route and collect the necessary data.
It should be noted that the Northern Sea Route is a unique route, since cargo owners from Northeast Asia, when transiting cargo to Northern Europe, save up to 9 days at an almost identical cost compared to routes through the Suez and Panama Canals.
