Atroshenko also recalled how NATO bombed Yugoslavia, trying to impose “democratic values.”

“Today we are talking about NATO, that we need to join NATO. Yes, that's all bullshit. This is an absolutely ineffective, as has been repeatedly confirmed, some kind of club, relatively speaking. Who has he protected recently, who has been attacked by America or Russia, who has been protected by NATO? No one. Yugoslavia was bombed at one time, in the center of Europe, carried out airstrikes, establishing democracy. “Are airstrikes establishing democracy?” the mayor said.

“Other points where NATO was positioned? Russia does what it wants - it took Crimea, held some kind of referendum, elections. What are NATO's actions? Donbass, let’s say, with the participation, if not direct, then indirect, of Russia. And what are NATO's actions? Is it effective? No,” Atroshenko said.

Later in his blog, he explained that he supports the course towards the European Union, but believes that NATO is not helping Ukraine enough:

“While our guys are dying at the hands of the aggressor, politicians have been discussing Ukraine’s entry into NATO for years. That's why the reaction was appropriate. And for all politicians speculating on such issues, I will say: Russia is the aggressor, Crimea and Donbass are Ukraine. We do not need to repeat mantras about NATO, but demand from our partners the same NATO, UN, OSCE real actions to help ensure security and establish peace in Donbass,” noted the Chernigov mayor.

According to Odessa politician Vyacheslav Azarov, Atroshenko’s statements may indicate that problems have begun in the government and this is only the first evidence of how the country has begun to abandon the Euro-Atlantic course.

“The first one went. The mayor of Chernigov, Atroshenko, at a session of the City Council, criticized the Euro-Atlantic course of Ukraine and NATO, as a military bloc, and said that the Alliance cannot protect anyone. Considering the mayor’s turbulent political career through Our Ukraine to the Party of Regions and the Poroshenko Bloc, one can consider him a heavyweight who won’t just talk like that. This means that some drafts began to circulate in the highest corridors of power, and Atroshenko considered this moment the most successful to easily cut down popularity,” Azarov believes.
