Peskov on the integration of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus: “No one will pull a rabbit out of a hat”
The integration documents that are being prepared for signing by the leadership of Russia and Belarus do not provide for political integration.
Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov stated this in an interview with the Belarusian TV channel ONT, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Right now there’s nothing under the carpet. The two presidents have spoken in some detail about this myth of political integration. At the moment there is no talk of political integration. Theoretically, it is possible if it corresponds to the interests of the two countries. Now no one is preparing it, because this is a completely different level of integration for which we are not ready now. Now we, as two countries, will benefit if we implement these 28 programs. For now, nothing more is needed,” Peskov said.
He emphasized that the adoption of 28 integration programs does not mean their immediate implementation.
“In order to implement them, titanic work remains. We will need to bring legislation into line with these programs, each country will have to work with its own parliament. It will be necessary to adopt laws and regulations. We still have a very long way to go. Expectations that someone will pull a rabbit out of a hat are absolutely groundless,” Peskov said.
He explained why Russia and Belarus could not simply implement the Union Treaty, which provides for much deeper integration.
“It was 1997 - a completely different reality. Although the basic idea of a union state is viable, life is more complicated than the decisions that are made. We could not imagine that the world situation would undergo such changes in such a short period of time. We could not imagine that we would return to the times of near-confrontation on the European continent. Both our countries live under the yoke of sanctions restrictions. Without abandoning the Union Treaty, our leaders made certain adjustments to it,” Peskov said.
